No Weenies Allowed: SpongeBob SquarePants

By: Frank Iacono

Are you ready kids? I mean are you really ready? Aye, Aye Captain! Well, I have four very important questions for you? First, who lives in a pineapple under the sea? Second, who is absorbent, yellow, and porous? Third, who makes his nautical nonsense something you wish? And, lastly who can make you drop on the deck and flop like a fish? For answers to these lifelong questions and more, please continue to read No Weenies Allowed: SpongeBob SquarePants.

So, What is SpongeBob SquarePants?

SpongeBob SquarePants (a.k.a. SpongeBob or Sponge), created by marine biologist and animator Stephen Hillenburg, is an American animated television series. The basis for SpongeBob SquarePants was formed by Hillenburg back in 1984, while he was teaching and studying marine biology at the Ocean Institute in Dana Point, California. During Hillenburg’s time at the institute he wrote a comic strip entitled The Intertidal Zone, which featured various anthropomorphic forms of sea life, many of which would evolve into the characters that appear in the SpongeBob series. Hillenburg began developing the series back in 1996 and later pitched the idea to Nickelodeon in 1998.

When Did SpongeBob SquarePants First Appear?

Following the pitch, Hillenburg and the series were later green lighted for a first season. The pilot episodes of SpongeBob SquarePants first aired on Nickelodeon on May 1, 1999, following the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. These episodes were called “Help Wanted,” “Reef Blower,” and “Tea at the Treedome.” The series centers on the exciting adventures and exploits of the main character SpongeBob, an extremely energetic and optimistic sea sponge (e.g., “absorbent, yellow and porous is he”) who lives in a pineapple under the sea with his pet snail Gary, and his friends in a city known as “Bikini Bottom.”

Who Are SpongeBob SquarePants Friends?

SpongeBob’s friends include his best friend Patrick Star, a dim-witted pink star fish who lives under a rock, Squidward Tentacles, an arrogant, obnoxious, and egotistical squid, Sandy Cheeks, a loveable karate fighting squirrel from Texas, Eugene Krabs, a tight crab who is obsessed with money and owns the Krusty Krab restaurant where SpongeBob works, and Sheldon Plankton, a small green crustacean who is Mr. Krabs arch rival because he owns the Chum Bucket directly across the street from the Krusty Krab.

Is SpongeBob SquarePants Popular?

Since SpongeBob SquarePants first debuted back in 1999, the series has captured the hearts of millions from around the country with its nautical nonsense ─ leaving us dropping to the deck and flopping like a fish. The show reached enormous popularity in 2000 and has remained popular ever since. On November 19, 2004, a feature film was released in movie theaters. The series celebrated its tenth anniversary on July 17, 2009, and is currently in its eighth season.

The popularity of the series prompted the creation of a media franchise, contributing to its position as Nickelodeon’s highest rated show, the most distributed property of MTV Networks, and among Nicktoons’ most-watched shows. In December 2009, Nickelodeon ordered enough episodes to bring the series up to 178 episodes. Long live SpongeBob SquarePants!
